An oil-water separator reduces free oil and solids under design conditions. It does not make all water harmless or guarantee discharge compliance by itself. Performance depends on flow, drainage area, droplet size, density, temperature, detergents, sediment, maintenance and the receiving point. “API separator” often describes a design principle or family; it does not prove that the equipment is certified or automatically complies with a particular API 421 edition.
