Wayne, Gilbarco and Tokheim against E10: compatibility table by brand for stations in Panama

At most Panamanian stations, the dispenser is one of three brands: Wayne, Gilbarco or Tokheim. When evaluating the transition to E10, the operational question is not generic: it is "does my brand and pump generation handle ethanol, or do I need a retrofit?". The answer changes by manufacturer and, within each manufacturer, by model line and year.

Why ethanol forces a dispenser review

E10 (10% ethanol, 90% gasoline) attacks two things that pure gasoline does not:

  • Elastomeric materials: ethanol degrades seals, O-rings and diaphragms made of nitrile (Buna-N/NBR) and natural rubber. The materials that resist are Viton (FKM), PTFE (Teflon) and modern derivatives.
  • Water: ethanol is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture. A dispenser and a tank that coexist with some water without problems on pure gasoline can suffer phase separation with E10, where the ethanol and water separate into a corrosive bottom layer. A dispenser's compatibility with E10 depends, then, on three zones: the meter (volumetric meter, with its internal seals), the external hoses and nozzles, and the filters. The first two depend on the brand and generation; the filters are changed the same way on all of them.

The lines and year cutoffs are industry references to guide the diagnosis, not a certificate per unit. Real compatibility is confirmed against the manufacturer's documentation and physical inspection of the meter. The same model can have different configurations depending on the year and the import market.

Wayne

The four Wayne lines most seen in Panama are Vista, 2400, Ovation and Helix. The Helix (post-2015) comes E10-ready from the factory: Viton seals and stock hoses typically UL 330. The modern Ovation is usually compatible, but early versions may have NBR at critical points of the meter. The 2400 is the classic retrofit case (Buna-N seals + hoses probably UL 6). The pre-2000 Vista is usually at the end of its service life: the retrofit rarely pays off versus replacement.

Gilbarco

Gilbarco is, together with Wayne, one of the dominant brands in the Panamanian market. The relevant generations:

  • Encore (recent generation, 500S / 700S / 900S platforms): designed for ethanol-blended fuels, with alcohol-resistant internal materials. Typical action: check hoses and filters, no meter retrofit.
  • Early Encore and Advantage: transition generation. They may carry a mix of materials depending on the year; they require meter inspection to identify elastomers before loading E10.
  • Legacy lines (The Highline and earlier): old equipment with nitrile or rubber elastomers; same criterion as a Wayne 2400/Vista: evaluate full retrofit vs. replacement according to remaining service life.

Tokheim

Tokheim is the third common brand. Its modern Quantium line (500/700) in recent versions is built for oxygenated fuels; the Premier and early Quantium models are the evaluation zone, and the old legacy series fall into the category of exhaustive retrofit or replacement. As with Gilbarco, the exact cutoff by year and submodel is confirmed with the manufacturer's documentation and inspection, not by the line label.

What is the same across the three brands

Regardless of brand, there are components treated the same way in the transition to E10:

Hoses. This is the point that fails fastest. A hose without a UL 330 marking (ethanol blends; its extension UL 330A covers specific constructions for alcohols) exposed to E10 swells internally (flow drops), cracks in the cover and releases particles that clog filters. Marked only "UL 6" or without a UL marking = change before the transition.

Filters. Mandatory change, not optional. Ethanol dissolves old deposits from the tank and line, which load the filter faster during the initial conversion. Recommended: a filter with water-phase detection (e.g. Cim-Tek 200E10) or equivalent, before the first E10 load. Afterward, change when flow drops below ~1 gpm (a sign of a filter saturated by water or a separated phase), upon any change of formulation, or on an indicative schedule (~6 months or ~500,000 gallons), more frequently in the first weeks of the conversion.

Nozzles and breakaways. Old automatic nozzles without an alcohol marking must be replaced. The breakaway (disconnect valve) must be E10-compatible.

Recalibration after touching the meter. Without that, the dispenser is technically repaired but legally out of service.

How to decide: retrofit or replacement

The criterion is not the brand: it is the remaining service life of the dispenser against the cost of adapting it:

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which brand and model I have? The dispenser nameplate shows brand and model; the year and the internal configuration (meter materials) require physical inspection. Do not assume compatibility from the brand: within the same line there are different configurations by year.

Can I mix brands at the same station? Yes, it is common to have Wayne and Gilbarco on the same island. The diagnosis is done per dispenser, not per station.

What happens if I load E10 without checking? Progressive failure: first clogged filters and low flow, then swollen hoses and compromised seals, and if there is water in the tank, phase separation. The order and speed depend on the condition of each unit.
