What the filter actually does

Between the underground line and the dispenser meter sits a threaded cartridge filter. Its functions:

3. Detect water in some modern models: they change color or restrict flow when they absorb water.
4. Stabilize flow by preventing turbulence that affects calibration.

Without a filter, or with a poorly specified filter, the rest of the dispensing train fails in cascade.

Why E10 changes the picture

When a station loads E10 for the first time after running on pure gasoline:

  • Ethanol dissolves old deposits built up on the tank walls and lines (additive residue, oxides, degraded gums).
  • These deposits travel down the line toward the filter.
  • A conventional filter clogs fast: sometimes in days, not months.
  • If it is not changed, flow drops, the customer waits longer, and the dispenser may give unstable readings.
  • That is why changing filters before loading E10 is a cheap decision. And a second change at 30 days post-E10 is practically mandatory.

  • Water-phase detection: how it works

    Filters labeled «phase separation detection» or «water indicator» use filter media that react visibly on contact with free water:

  • In normal operation, the filter has a uniform color (typically white/cream).
  • When it absorbs water, the media expands or changes color (blue, red, green depending on the brand).
  • The change reduces flow (restriction increases). The operator notices low flow + a visual indicator.

    Skipping the Day +30 change is a frequent mistake: the filter after the first E10 load is usually at 70% saturation and fails the following quarter.

    How to measure pressure differential

    Some dispensers have gauge ports before and after the filter. The normal pressure drop is 2-5 psi. When it rises to:

  • 5-10 psi: filter at 60-70%, consider changing soon
  • 10-15 psi: urgent change
  • >15 psi: immediate change, the dispenser may give inaccurate measurements
  • Without a gauge, the operational symptom is low flow: if a nozzle that normally dispenses at 10 gpm drops to 7 gpm with no apparent cause, suspect the filter.

    The most expensive mistake: running the old filter «until it bursts»

    In stations under cost pressure, there is a temptation to extend filter life until it fails outright. Observed consequences:

    1. Chronic low flow = annoyed customers and possible loss of sales to competitors.
    2. Internal filter bypass if pressure exceeds the internal seal: particles reach the meter directly.
    3. Meter damage from particles (calibration drift → failing ACODECO).
    4. Sudden cartridge failure during operation: internal spill in the dispenser sump.

    A filter is a low-cost component. A meter damaged by particles the filter should have retained costs orders of magnitude more in replacement and labor.

    Compatibility with other components

    The filter does not operate in isolation. For it to work well, the components downstream and upstream must also be E10-compatible:

  • Suction line: if it has rust or residue, the filter loads faster: aggressive first change.
  • Meter seals: Viton, not Buna-N (see Wayne pumps).
  • Dispensing hoses: UL 330 marked for alcohols.
  • Nozzle: marked for alcohols.
  • Changing only the filter without addressing the other components is a patch that wears out.

    Used filter disposal

    Filters saturated with gasoline or water-ethanol are hazardous waste under MIAMBIENTE. They cannot be thrown in regular trash. Proper disposal:

    1. Let drain for 30 minutes over an absorbent tray.
    2. Store in a closed metal drum labeled «HYDROCARBON WASTE».
    3. Accumulate until you have a batch.
    4. Hand over to a MIAMBIENTE-authorized waste handler (several companies in Panama offer this service).

    An improperly disposed filter can be flagged in an environmental inspection and result in a warning or fine.

    Frequently asked questions

    Can I use the same filter for diesel and for E10 gasoline?
    No. The micron rating is different (30 µm for diesel, 10 µm for gasoline) and diesel additives can affect the water detection of the gasoline filter. Dedicated filters per product.
